Our History

Years ago, a family suffered an unimaginable tragedy: Their 15-year-old died from sudden cardiac arrest during basketball practice. Amidst his grief, a relative wanted to do something to prevent other families from experiencing the same devastation. In 2008, he teamed with a cardiologist to create Mobile Cardiac Overview and Risk Evaluation, or mCORE, LLC, with a focus on providing mobile cardiac risk assessments for Ohio student athletes ages 12-22 years old.

The pair created an automated assessment tool and screening program that they offered directly to school athletic communities. Screenings were offered during the school day to make the service convenient, and included an electrocardiogram and limited echocardiogram to identify heart abnormalities that could potentially lead to a student's sudden cardiac death.

While this high-level offering provided tests that were unavailable except for family history or emergent medical issues, most people didn't recognize the need for it. Even if available, the testing would be cost prohibitive for many.

The solution? MCORE Foundation. MCORE Foundation was born out of the desire to expand our reach and provide awareness, education, and screenings regardless of someone's ability to pay.
Established in 2014 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Foundation dove into creating awareness and leading fundraising to promote this new, expanded mission.

Today, the mCORE automated system is still one of a kind. The system enables parents to sign up online and create an account for their child and family. Screenings typically take place in schools, with imaging done by certified cardiac sonographers who upload content that's read by pediatric cardiologists. We also deliver and store baseline imaging in PDF format (ECG) and .mp4 files (echo) for each screening participant that can be accessed and shared with a family's medical provider at any time.
